The Future of Islamic Microfinance Management: Regulatory Innovation for a Resilient and Sustainable Islamic Financial System

Syafrudin Hanafi Siregar

Abstract

This study examines the future of Islamic microfinance management through the lens of regulatory innovation as a strategic pathway toward achieving a resilient and sustainable Islamic financial system. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) combined with content analysis and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), the research synthesizes insights from thirty peer-reviewed articles published between 2020 and 2025 in Scopus and Sinta-indexed journals. The findings reveal four interrelated themes driving the transformation of Islamic microfinance institutions (IMFIs): adaptive regulation, digital transformation, Shariah-based governance, and sustainability alignment with Maqasid al-Shariah and SDGs.

The results indicate that regulatory innovation—anchored in principle-based and sandbox-oriented frameworks—enhances institutional flexibility, fosters fintech adoption, and strengthens ethical accountability. Furthermore, digital governance supported by Shariah compliance safeguards IMFIs from systemic risk while ensuring operational transparency. The integration of Maqasid al-Shariah with sustainability goals not only reinforces social responsibility but also positions Islamic microfinance as a catalyst for inclusive growth and environmental stewardship.

This study proposes a conceptual model for the future of Islamic microfinance management built upon four strategic pillars: adaptive regulation, digital governance, ethical resilience, and sustainability integration. Collectively, these pillars outline a roadmap for policymakers, regulators, and practitioners to reimagine Islamic microfinance as a dynamic, ethical, and sustainable component of the global financial ecosystem.
