Abstract

Multiculturalism in Sukereno Village, where the majority of its residents are Muslims, Catholics, Hindus and the Sapta Darma Belief, makes it known as the Pancasila Village. In understanding a multicultural society, a boundary theory approach can be used to understand the interactions that occur. This study aims to see how social boundaries are formed, their influence on the interactions of religious adherents and the boundary negotiations carried out by individuals. For this reason, this study uses a qualitative phenomenological approach in looking at the daily experiences of individuals. The subjects of the study were religious leaders and belief groups, village officials and village residents. The results of the study show that there are social boundaries that are visible from places of worship and the implementation of religious rituals. However, there is flexible negotiation space so that harmony is created between religious adherents. Flexibility related to social boundaries is seen in the involvement of social activities between religious adherents so that tolerance is created.
